20,000 candles (and 3,500 soccer ball-shaped sandbags). One for each of the migrant workers who lost their lives in Qatar in the construction of the World Cup stadiums for inhumane working conditions. In the stadium of Hernea town in western Germany, the artist Volker-Johannes Trieb and the workers of the occupational safety agency AWO have created this special initiative to further raise public awareness on what happened in the emirate in conjunction with the start of the world championship.

Fifa and the Qatari government have passed over the corpses and this fact cannot be forgotten as the World Cup is celebrated. The life of migrant workers is more important than any kind of profit. These people were treated like slaves, they died of heat, exhaustion or insufficient safety conditions,” Trieb said.
