Italy won the 2022 Beach Tennis World Cup. The Azzurri prevailed on the sand of Praia di Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, defeating Brazil in the scorching final. The Azzurri ruled the hosts 2-1, taking revenge for the final act lost last year. Giulia Gasparri and Ninny Valentini they lost 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 in the women’s doubles against Vittoria Marchezini and Rafaella Miller, failing to score a match point.
Subsequently Michele Cappelletti and Mattia Spoto (respectively gold and silver at the last World Cup) prevailed in the men’s doubles against Andre Boran and Allan Oliveira (5-7, 6-0, 10-8). Mixed doubles proved to be decisive: Sofia Cimatti and Michele Cappelletti they beat Raffaella Miller and Andre Boran 6-3, 3-6, 10-4. The Azzurri led by coach Simona Bonadonna had giants in the preliminary stages: in the group they had liquidated Japan, Portugal and Puerto Rico without losing a set; then the claims against Germany and Venezuela in the knockout stage.
Italy won the World Cup for the fifth time in its history (2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2022) and precedes Brazil in the roll of honor, stopped at four. Rounding out the podium was Venezuela, who beat Spain 2-1. Italy also celebrates the title with the junior team: Irene Mariotti, Elena Francesconi, Giulia Renzi, Luca Andreolini, Edoardo Ponti and Peter Campedelli beat Venezuela 2-0 in the decisive match.
