United Kingdom, the Supreme Court denies the independence referendum to Scotland: “We need the consent of Westminster”

LONDON – Another defeat for Nicholas Sturgeon and the Scottish independence activists. The British Supreme Court in fact reiterated this morning that the local government of Edinburgh cannot independently decide to keep another legal referendum about independence, after that lost in 2014because “the last word always belongs to the Parliament of Westminster” as well as to the British government, as required by law.

The Scottish first minister, who said she was “disappointed” by the “difficult to accept” result, instead asked that the local Scottish parliament be given the authority to hold a new consultation.
